The Trump administration’s recent actions, including cuts to federal agencies, tariff increases, and the dismantling of DEI policies, have sparked a largely negative response among the public. Notably, a majority of Republicans support these measures, contrasting sharply with the views of Democrats, where disapproval rates are high. Immigration remains a divisive topic, with respondents split on what they appreciate or dislike about the administration.
In the past few months, the Trump administration has taken several significant actions, including shrinking the federal government, raising tariffs on imported goods, and dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. Yet public sentiment tends to lean negative, with many Americans expressing dissatisfaction with all three initiatives. Interestingly, though, a strong majority of Republicans show support for each of these measures, suggesting a party divide in attitudes.
When surveyed about what they appreciate or dislike about Trump’s current term, responses are varied. For instance, immigration policy is frequently highlighted as a positive aspect, cited by 20% of participants, but 11% also mention it as one of their least-favoured features. A significant 30% remain indifferent or claim there’s nothing they like at all about the administration. Governing style garners the most criticism, with concerns raised about tariffs and government reductions.
Regarding cuts to federal agencies, 55% of polled Americans disapprove of the Trump administration’s approach, while only 44% approve. Republicans comprise a considerable portion of the approving group, with 78% showing support, but a notable 89% of Democrats push back against these cuts. It’s a stark divide, though a small number of Republicans (22%) express disapproval, which is notably more than the 11% of Democrats who back the cuts.
Within the Republican party, conservative members show high approval for government cuts, with 87% in favour. Conversely, only 64% of moderate Republicans share that view. Among Democrats, disapproval is nearly unanimous, with 96% of liberals voicing strong opposition. The public gap in perception is clear, as 59% of respondents see the cuts as overly reckless, while 51% predict they’ll worsen government effectiveness.
Then there’s the matter of tariffs. A sizable 59% of Americans are against the tariff hikes initiated by the Trump administration, with 43% strongly opposed—these figures highlight a noticeable disproval. Whereas among party lines, 90% of Democrats disapprove, only 70% of Republicans approve, again splitting perspectives. Racial demographics show a stark contrast too; the majority of Black adults and Hispanic adults disapprove, while responses vary across age groups and household income levels.
Finally, when it comes to the ending of DEI policies in the federal arena, a slim 53% of the public disapproves. However, Republicans shine through as supportive, with 78% approval. Disapproval from Democrats is even more pronounced, hitting 86%. And among conservatives, that approval reaches as high as 90%, contrasting sharply with sentiments from liberal Democrats, where a hefty 94% disapprove.
In a nutshell, many Americans seem caught between a mix of dissatisfaction regarding Trump’s actions, with Republicans generally more supportive than their Democratic counterparts. Public sentiments paint an increasingly divided picture on the administration’s policies, as Americans navigate their complex feelings toward tariffs, government cuts, and the removal of DEI practices.
